The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and versatile routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers stunning views, diverse landscapes, and a high success rate due to its longer acclimatization period. Starting from the western side of the mountain, the route traverses lush rainforest, expansive heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit zone. It is an ideal choice for climbers looking for a quieter, less crowded trek with opportunities to experience the diverse ecosystems of Kilimanjaro.
The route begins at Londorossi Gate, where climbers enter the rainforest zone. Wildlife sightings are common in this area, including the possibility of spotting colobus monkeys. This route is designed to allow ample time for acclimatization, which increases the likelihood of reaching the summit successfully. Its gradual ascent and extra days make it a safer option for climbers without prior altitude experience – Lemosho Route has one of the highest summit success rates of all Kilimanjaro routes. Besides, compared to other routes like Machame and Marangu, Lemosho is less crowded in the initial stages, offering a more serene trekking experience.
Itinerary:
The Lemosho Route can be completed in 7, 8, or 9 days depending on the climber’s preference and acclimatization needs. Below is a typical 8-day itinerary:
