The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic trekking routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Known for its diverse landscapes, challenging terrain, and high success rates, the Machame Route attracts both novice and experienced climbers looking for an adventurous and rewarding journey.
The Machame Route typically takes 6 to 7 days to complete, depending on the itinerary chosen. This route offers excellent acclimatization opportunities due to its “climb high, sleep low” profile, which helps increase the chances of successfully reaching the Uhuru Peak. Despite being more physically demanding than some other routes, the breathtaking views and varied ecosystems make it a favorite choice among trekkers.
One of the highlights of the Machame Route is the incredible variety of landscapes that climbers experience. The journey begins in lush rainforest at the base of the mountain, progressing through moorlands, alpine deserts, and finally to the snow-capped summit. Along the way, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of Mount Meru, the Shira Plateau, and the surrounding valleys.
Itinerary Highlights
- Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The trek begins at Machame Gate (1,800m) and ascends through the lush rainforest to Machame Camp (~3,000m). This is a 5-7 hour hike. - Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
The trail leads out of the rainforest and into moorland, offering stunning views of the Shira Plateau. The hike takes about 4-6 hours, and altitude reaches approximately 3,840m. - Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

The route continues through alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the base camp for the summit attempt. Trekkers prepare for a very early morning ascent. - Day 6: Summit Attempt and Descent
Starting at midnight, climbers ascend to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, the descent begins, with an overnight stay at Mweka Camp (~3,100m). - Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final day is a descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m), where climbers receive their certificates of achievement.
